How to Update Your Shoe Wardrobe For Spring 2012

Updated on April 10, 2012

Introduction

Shoes are a pretty important accessory. Every season requires a new type of shoe. For example, you're not going to wear sandals when it's snowing. But that's an easy example. Here's a better one: you're not going to wear open toe pumps to work if it's going to rain. You would wear boots or high-heeled booties right? But season doesn't dictate everything about your shoe wardrobe. Your shoes also have to match your personal style and vibe. A girly-girl who wears dresses and skirts won't be buying lug-soled anything as it'll look a little out of place with her super sweet dresses. So how do you get an extensive shoe wardrobe to fit all of your needs?

Pre-Planning

Every season I take a look at my shoe collection and try to figure out what I need to fill in the gaps for the upcoming season. By that, I mean what's new and cool that I don't already have and shoes I need to either fix or replace due to wear and damage (If you don't have a cobbler that you trust find one STAT). Taking the time to do this every 3-4 months means I have a pretty good idea of what I need when I'm out shopping or surfing the net for sales. Having a mental list like this will also cut down on buying shoes that I may wear once or twice but, really don't fit into my wardrobe style and needs. Also, it's easier to stand in your closet matching up shoes and outfits rather than try to figure it out when you're shopping whether a certain pair of shoes will fit into your wardrobe. Finally, if you know what you're looking for you can make sure you're spending your dollars wisely by catching sales and promotions rather than paying full price.

Spring 2012 Shoes

So for Spring 2012 I’ve noticed 3 big trends for shoes: Turquoise, Peep-toe Booties, and Tough Accents

Turquoise seems to be THE color of the season. If you don’t have a pair of turquoise shoes in your wardrobe then you need to get on this ASAP! Also, you may think you’ve got nothing to wear turquoise shoes with right? Well, you’re completely wrong! If you treat turquoise as a neutral rather than a bright color you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how much these shoes will go with. Here are some of my favorites that I’ve found so far:

Peep-toe Booties

Booties are already huge. However, peep-toe booties are Spring's new twist on the shoe that is fast becoming a wardrobe staple. The trick to picking out great booties is use the bootie to cover your leg flaws. For girls with larger calves, stay away from booties that go over your ankle. You'll just look like you have cankles. For girls with leaner legs you can go a little higher but, once you venture too high it's no longer a bootie. Finally, girls with large feet, don't pick the super chunky wedge version of this shoe. You'll definitely draw attention to not only the large shoe but the large foot as well.

Here are some great choices to help you fill out your wardrobe:

Tough Details

Pricey but completely worth it. These shoes will last you for years.

Finally, tough details have gotten to be a huge trend this spring. Look for metallic hardware like chains and spikes. Sometimes it's fun to mix super tough details with very girly details like rhinestones or feathers.

Here are some of the ones that I love for this season:
